Foreign workers and students: the whole family can now register or re-register for health insurance online!

Are you temporarily staying in Québec and accompanied by family members? In most cases, you can now register for health insurance entirely online. Here are a few tips before you register.

To each its own form

Each family member temporarily staying in Québec must complete their own application form and attach their own documents.

Reference number for the registration of a family
When you complete your registration, you will receive an acknowledgement of receipt by email containing a reference number. This number will be required for the registration of other family members to facilitate processing.

Registration of a child
To register your child, you must use the Child application form. This form must be completed by one of the parents or the legal guardian of the child.

Mandatory documents

Required documents for registration vary depending on your situation. Here are some examples of the documents required:

  • Document authorizing you to temporarily stay in Québec, issued by the Canadian immigration authorities. This may be a study permit, a work permit or an authorization of entry, for example.
  • Certificate of coverage under your country’s social security plan, if you are from a country that has signed an agreement with Québec. This document is mandatory for students and must be obtained before you leave for Québec.
  • Québec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ), if you are in Québec to pursue studies.
  • Proof of Canadian citizenship.
  • Persons accompanying you may have to provide additional documents, for example marriage certificate, proof of full-time study, sworn statement.

A few mistakes to avoid

To prevent delays in the processing of your file, avoid these 3 mistakes:

  • Register before your arrival in Québec: you must be in Québec to apply.
  • Register 2 times. Processing times may be longer during peak periods, but all applications will be processed as soon as possible.
  • Attach illegible documents: make sure the files you attach to your application are legible.

That’s it! You will receive an acknowledgement of receipt by email which confirms receipt of your application.

The letter confirming your eligibility and your Health Insurance Card will then be sent to you by mail. You will receive them, in 2 separate mailings, at the address indicated on the form.
