Renewing a Health Insurance Card
Validity period of a Health Insurance Card
Effective October 1, 2014, the validity period of a Health Insurance Cards may be extended up to 8 years.
The transition to 8-year cards will take place gradually. From now until 2018, those persons whose age is a multiple of 8 (16 years, 24 years, 32 years, 40 years, 48 years, 56 years, 64 years, etc.) will receive an 8-year card when they renew their card. The remainder will receive a card that is valid for 4 years. As a result, you could receive an 8-year card while another family member receives a 4-year card.
If you have a driver’s licence, both it and your Health Insurance Card will expire on the same date. Because the Régie is acting in partnership with the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), you can renew both official documents at the same time.
Please note that the Régie may issue a card valid for a different period of time if your situation warrants it.
Your Health Insurance Card is valid up to and including the last day of the month appearing next to “expiration” above your signature. For instance, if “2018 01” appears on your card, you can use it up to January 31, 2018 inclusive.
Renewing your Health Insurance Card is mandatory
You are required to renew your Health Insurance Card before it expires if you wish to receive covered services free of charge under the Health Insurance Plan. Save yourself a lot of worries and have a valid card on hand.
If your card expired more than 6 months ago, you will be charged $25 to renew it, in addition to the fee for having your photo taken. You will also be asked to provide additional documents.
You should receive a renewal notice 3 months before your card expires.
If you recently registered for the Health Insurance Plan and are aged 18 or over, you will receive a renewal notice 45 days before your card expires.
If you don’t receive a renewal notice or if you misplace it, call us or go to one of our reception desks during office hours. It is important that you notify the Régie if you move to make sure that the notice is sent to the right place.
Persons to whom a renewal notice is not issued
You won’t receive a renewal notice if you:
- are in Québec temporarily
- are settled in Québec under a temporary immigration document
- didn’t have permanent resident status when you registered for the Health Insurance Plan
If your situation is one of the above, the renewal of your Health Insurance Card and eligibility are subject to different conditions. Call us or go to one of our reception desks during office hours to obtain the appropriate form and to find out what documents you will need to provide.
