Know the eligibility conditions for health insurance

Register my child for health insurance

All children under age 18 residing in Québec for more than 6 months are eligible for the Québec Health Insurance Plan.

Child born in Québec

If you or the other parent is already registered for health insurance, you do not have to register your child born in Québec. Whether you are in Québec as a resident or for a temporary stay, the information needed to register your child will be sent to us by the Directeur de l’état civil.

If neither parent is eligible for health insurance at the time we receive the information from the Directeur de l’état civil, we will contact you in writing to assess your child’s eligibility. If eligible, you will be required to provide us with documents to register your child, depending on their situation.

Child born outside Québec or adopted

You may register your child for health insurance online if you or the other parent are, at the time of birth, in one of these situations:

For any other situation of birth outside Québec, you must call us.
